If you love movies — especially art-house, indie, classic or international films — then Cineteca Nacional in Coyoacán is a must-visit. It’s Mexico City’s iconic film archive and cinema complex, blending culture, history and a vibrant community in one spot.
What is Cineteca Nacional?
- Cineteca Nacional is the national film archive and cinematheque of Mexico. Since its founding in 1974, it has played a key role in preserving and promoting Mexican cinema as well as films from around the world.
- After a devastating fire in 1982 destroyed its original home, the institution moved to its current location in Xoco, on Avenida México-Coyoacán 389. The new building opened in 1984.
- A major renovation and expansion in 2012 transformed the space into a modern cultural hub — with multiple screening rooms, outdoor cinema, galleries, a film library, restoration labs, and inviting public plazas.

What to Do There
- Watch unique films: Cineteca doesn’t focus on mainstream commercial movies. Instead, you’ll find independent, auteur, classic, and foreign films — many of which you wouldn’t see in a regular multiplex.
- Outdoor screenings & events: There’s a lovely outdoor forum where, on pleasant evenings, you can enjoy films under the sky. It’s a great vibe — often casual, relaxed, community-oriented.
- Explore film history and culture: Cineteca houses an extensive archive — films, posters, photographs — plus a library and periodic exhibitions on cinema history. If you’re curious about classic Mexican cinema or want to dive deep into film culture, this is a fantastic place.
- Relax in a beautiful public space: The architecture and design make the complex feel a bit like a small cultural campus. The plazas, gardens, and open spaces invite you just to chill, grab a snack, or meet people.
